Developed by the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center and sponsored by USMC Systems Command, this military dust control program evaluated the effectiveness of various dust palliatives through field testing in Yuma, Arizona; Douglas, Arizona; and Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Products were assessed under rotary-wing aircraft operations, convoy vehicle traffic, and environmental exposure. Soiltac, Powdered Soiltac, and Durasoil—manufactured by Soilworks—were consistently tested across multiple sites and scenarios. Durasoil ranked among the highest-performing suppressants in aircraft rotor wash environments, with minimal foreign object debris (FOD) risk and superior reworkability. Soiltac and Powdered Soiltac demonstrated strong bonding and dust suppression when applied as admixtures or topically on helipads and unpaved roads.
Durasoil, a synthetic organic fluid, performed exceptionally under extreme traffic and climatic conditions, delivering waterless, non-tracking dust suppression suitable for both temporary and long-term use. Soiltac’s copolymer emulsion formulation created flexible, erosion-resistant surfaces with effective PM control, while Powdered Soiltac offered scalable deployment in remote or expeditionary settings.
