SECTION 31 32 17
ARMORED AGGREGATE SURFACE COURSE STABILIZATION PART 1 — GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
The purpose of this section is to address the application of a polymeric emulsion treatment on completed aggregate surface course material for the purpose of dust control.
1.2 SUBMITTALS
Material Certificates: Certificates signed by supplier certifying that stabilizer material is of the type, quality and grade specified.
PART 2 — PRODUCTS
2.1 ARMOR PRODUCT
The synthetic organic fluid for dust control shall be DURASOIL® as supplied by Soil Stabilization Products Company, Incorporated, or approved equal. The dust control product shall be a clear, odorless fluid, polyolefin and carboxylic acid free, applied neat and simple, without need for water dilution. The dust control product shall be a continuously re-workable fluid that does not cure and that has been proven effective on unpaved roads and tank trails subject to tracked vehicle and tank traffic. It shall be capable of being applied in freezing conditions and effective once penetrated without need for curing time. The product shall be non-hazardous, non-toxic, non-flammable, non-volatile and non-corrosive. A standard Materials Safety Data Sheet shall be furnished by the supplier.
2.2 MATERIALS
2.2.1 Aggregate Surface Course materials shall meet the requirements of Section 32 15 00 AGGREGATE SURFACE COURSE.
2.2.2 Water shall be furnished by the Contractor and shall be clean and free from industrial wastes and other objectionable matter.
2.3 MATERIALS HANDLING AND STORAGE
The synthetic organic fluid product may be stored on site with no limitation on air temperature requirements. The product has unlimited shelf life.
PART 3 – EXECUTION
3.0 EXAMINATION
3.1 Verification of General Conditions: The completed course shall be free from loose or segregated areas, of uniform density and moisture content, for its full depth and shall have a smooth surface.

3.2 WEATHER LIMITATIONS
3.2.1 General: The armor product shall not be applied when it is raining or when rain is expected. The product is stable in freezing temperatures and can still be applied at -5°F (-15°C).
3.3 EQUIPMENT FOR MIXING AND PLACEMENT
3.3.1 Placement of armor material application shall be by distributor truck or other fluid spray equipment capable of placing the product at controlled rates from 0.05 to 0.25 gallons per square yard with an allowable variation from any specified rate not to exceed 0.02 gallons per square yard.
3.4 APPLICATION OF ARMOR TREATMENT
3.4.1 General: The completed surface course shall be free from loose rock, soil or debris on the surface. The surface should be dry and in no case above the Optimum Moisture Content of the surface course material.
3.4.2 Application Rate: The application rate for the armor product will be from 0.18 to 0.23 gallons per square yard, as determined in the field with the approval of the Contracting Officer’s Representative. Additional armor product should be applied on an as needed basis during ongoing construction operations to maintain effective dust control on the completed surface course
3.4.3 Multiple Coats: Apply the armor product over the treatment area. Multiple coats are unnecessary, expect to prevent runoff. The armor product may be applied in a single coat, depending upon the permeability of the surface.
3.5 PROTECTION OF ARMOR APPLICATION
3.5.1 Prevent all traffic and human activity over the treated area until the armor product application has penetrated the surface of the aggregate surface course.
