KVOA Ch 4 NBC News Tucson – Lawmaker Wants to Fight Dust Problems Near Picacho (TPD1606047)

TUCSON – A state lawmaker wants to prevent dust problems on Interstate 10 near Picacho.

Sen. Steve Farley knows the road better than most people.

“One of the problems with being elected to the legislature, which there are many, is that you have to spend an awful lot of time on I-10 going back and forth between Tucson and Phoenix,” Farley said.

In May blowing dust on the freeway near San Simon forced state troopers to repeatedly close the road. That is now being treated with a solution called Gorilla-Snot.

Farley said there is a more natural solution for Pinal County. He said the United States Department of Agriculture built burms and planted native vegetation near Red Rock in the 1970s.

“There are people from the USDA ready to work and put in some of those trenches in there as well to stop it,” Farley said. “And I think we will get there.”
