Comparison Between Results on Midwest and Soilworks Polymers (TPD2009028)

Test on polymers for soil stabilization for funding a project on anti-seismic design

COMPARISON BETWEEN RESULTS ON MIDWEST AND SOILWORKS POLYMERS

Preliminary results on treated sands. We compared old tests obtained with Soiltac® by SOILWORKS with the tests on same type of granular material treated with SOIL SEMENT by Midwest (Formula A).

Table of results:

SOILTAC 180 days

MIDWEST 30 days

UCS (KPa) after curing

7500

6800

UCS (KPa) after wetting

720

680

TEST are UCS Unconfined Compression Test on sand cylinders treated and left at the lab environmental humidity: for 30 days in case of SOIL SEMENT and 180 days for the SOILTAC.

The strength of SOILTAC after 30 days was lower circa 5 MPa (not reported). This means the Midwest seems to reach equilibrium in a shorter time.

Filtration of Soil Sement is easier because formula is less viscous and this seems an advantage for site treatment.

Remarks: we obtained same peak strength with two different commercial products. The values are sensibly higher than the minimum RISK obtainable with Geotechnical Intervention or maximum class according EC8 Euro code 8 Seismic Design. It means depending on buildings Midwest polymer can be used to change class of RISK from E the minimum to A the best one. Approximatively the worst humidity conditions guarantee a UCS with vapor coalescence of 700 KPa, means 3 times the CU of the norm. Liquefaction means a residual CU of 5 – 10 KPa class S1.
